Hoopsters bounced

It just wasn’t meant to be.
The Muskie senior boys’ basketball dropped back-to-back games to the Westgate Tigers on Friday and Saturday in the NWOSSAA final in Thunder Bay to fall short of advancing to the all-Ontarios for the first time since 2001.
The black-and-gold didn’t have an answer for the duo of Jeff Barnwell and Taylor Gynane in Game 1 on Friday afternoon, allowing the pair to score 52 of their team’s 59 points in a 59-40 win.
Of Barnell’s 32 points, 27 came from nine three-pointers while Gynane hit three from beyond the arc en route to his 20 points.
“Those two guys really lit it up and we didn’t have an answer for them,” Muskie coach Paul Noonan conceded.
Game 2 on Saturday morning brought a change of strategy for the Muskies—and it worked in containing the Tigers’ two top guns. But Westgate’s depth propelled them to a hard-fought 49-44 victory.
Travis Stromness had 22 points Saturday to lead the Muskies, but it was not enough to overcome the hosts.
Westgate is now off to the OFSAA ‘AA’ tournament March 9-11 in Timmins.
