Going into last’s night third round-robin game at the Royal Bank Cup Junior ‘A’ national championship against the host Camrose Kodiaks (Alberta), Fort Frances native Kyle Turgeon and the rest of the Portage Terriers sat in a three-way tie for second in the five-team standings with a 1-1 record.
The Terriers opened round-robin play with a 5-2 triumph over the Pembroke Lumber Kings (Ontario) on Sunday afternoon, then dropped a 5-2 decision Monday afternoon to the two-time defending champion Vernon Vipers (British Columbia).
Turgeon, who has one assist so far in the tournament, will conclude his round-robin schedule tomorrow afternoon against the Wellington Dukes (Ontario).
The final goes Sunday, which will be aired nationally on TSN.

Devlin’s Jordan Davis began his own quest for a championship trophy last night as his Topeka Roadrunners took on the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in their opening round-robin game of the NAHL’s Robertson Cup, which is taking place at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka until Sunday.
The Amarillo Bulls and Michigan Warriors also are competing in the four-team tournament.
The Warriors edged the Bismarck Bobcats, which included Fort Frances goalie Ryan Faragher, in a 6-5 double-overtime thriller last Friday night to determine the final seed in the tournament.
Faragher did come away with some hardware, though, as he was named to the NAHL’s all-Central Division team.

This Saturday will mark the annual OHL priority selection draft for 1995 birth dates, which may see a local player chosen during the 15-round affair.
One of those players eligible to be drafted is Fort Frances-born forward Jordan Larson, who led the Thunder Bay Kings’ Minor Midget team in scoring this past season with 86 points in 59 games.
The last local player to be selected in the OHL draft was blueliner Jon Carlson, who was taken in the eighth round last year by the Ottawa 67s and just narrowly missed out on making the team last fall.
