Hockey players enjoy fun day

Close to 160 players aged five-eight from the Emo and Fort Frances minor hockey associations took part in the “Chevrolet Safe and Fun Hockey Program” on Saturday at the Memorial Sports Centre here.
The program has run since 1999, but it’s the first time it was offered in Fort Frances.
“Every year they pick a town with Chevrolet dealerships to hold it,” noted co-ordinator Shauna-Leigh Carlson.
“The idea is to incorporate fun and safety back into hockey, and this is the age where they have to start to show that,” she stressed.
The program also is meant to foster the values of respect and responsibility and offered a fun approach to teaching teamwork and sportsmanship, as well as hockey fundamentals.
“I thought it went really well,” Carlson added. “The kids had a great time, and they got jerseys and a certificate.”
Parents also were invited to get involved by attending “A Parent’s Approach” seminar.
The sponsor also provided a unique draw prize for one lucky player—a pass to a three-day summer hockey camp to meet renowned hockey players Bobby Ore, Mike Bossy, and Cassie Campbell.
The prize was won by Preston Azevedo of Emo.
“We’re really hoping it’s an event that we’ll be able to bring back to the community,” Carlson noted.
