Hewitt Cup starting to come together

The foundation for this spring’s Dudley Hewitt Cup tournament here gradually is taking shape.
A meeting last night at the Couchiching Rec Centre saw the establishment of a game schedule for the April 22-26 event, which will determine the provincial Junior ‘A’ hockey champs and Ontario’s rep at the Royal Bank Cup national tournament May 3-11 in Charlottetown.
A March 22 deadline for Borderland Thunder season ticket-holders to purchase their seats for the tournament also was set last night.
“The season ticket-holders will get first dibs,” said Blake Bruyere, event co-organizer and chairman of the Thunder’s board of directors. “After that, their seats will be available to the public.”
There will be two games a day during the preliminary round April 22-24, with the semi-final slated April 25 and the final on April 26.
Rooms for the incoming teams will be booked starting today while an official logo for the event, marketing packages to approach potential sponsors, and the booking of flight reservations should all be in place by next week.
Securing coverage of the games by the local cable company, as well as the issue of avoiding surpassing capacity in the Memorial Sports Centre during the event, still were areas Bruyere said required discussion.
The next meeting will be held this Wednesday (Jan. 15) at 7 p.m. at the Couchiching Rec Centre.
