The Fort Frances Her-icanes went for a run last night—lots of them, actually.
Amy Penner, Dana Ward, and Jessica Woodgate each had four hits as the Her-icanes earned their third-straight win with an 38-10 rout over the Fort Frances Juniors in Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League action last night at VanJura.
The ’Canes (7-3) used an 11-run second inning and a 10-run fourth to put away the Juniors (1-8-1).
Other action saw Erika Paulsen win a pitching duel against Karma Andy as the visiting Fort Frances Mud Dogs (6-3-1) blanked the host Manitou Blaze (4-6) 3-0.
The Couchiching Lady Raiders (8-2-1) stayed on a roll, meanwhile, winning their sixth-straight game with a 20-6 romp over the host Sabaskong Cougars (2-7).
But the second-place Lady Raiders couldn’t make up any ground on league-leading Big Grassy.
The Lynx (10-0) remained perfect on the year with a 13-9 road victory over the Red Gut Babes (6-3-1), who have lost two-straight for the first time in two seasons.
The Northwest Bay Beavers (7-2-1) made it seven-straight wins with a 28-1 pounding of the host Big Island Wildcats (2-6-1).
And the expansion Dawson Diggers (2-5) have their first two-game winning streak in team history following a 27-6 blowout over host Sabaskong Tebinaak (1-8).
A number of makeup games will be played over the next five days before the league breaks up into East and West Divisions for the second half of the season, which begins next Wednesday (June 24).
In Rainy River District Fastball League action from Tuesday, the Rainy Lake Pirates (8-0) took over first place with a 12-4 win over the host Barwick Blue Knights (8-2).
The Blue Knights only were down 5-4 entering the seventh before the Pirates exploded for seven runs—capped by Cole Tymkin’s grand slam.
The Sight & Sound Wolves (7-0-1), who got two home runs and another solid pitching outing from John Desaulniers, won 7-1 over the visiting Stratton Bobcats (3-4).
Windey’s Warriors (7-2) cruised to a 19-2 win over the Manitou Thunderbirds (3-5) at Couchiching.
The Couchiching Raiders (5-4) fell 14-13 to the host Big Island Huskies (2-5-1) while the Sabaskong Cubs (2-6) topped the host Rainy River Royals (1-8) 12-5.
And the Sabaskong Lakers (2-6) blasted the Dawson Tigers (3-6) 15-5.
There will be makeup games tonight before the RRDFL moves into the second half of its schedule.
In a “Battle of Couchiching,” the Raiders will lock horns with the Warriors while the Wolves will welcome the Royals at VanJura.
Both games start at 7 p.m.
