Like father, like son–and the rest of the team was pretty likable, too.
Steve Gushulak, with his dad, Bill, at lead, claimed the ‘A’-event title at the annual Fort Frances men’s bonspiel with a 7-6, extra-end victory over fellow Fort skip Mark Broman in Sunday’s final.
The Gushulaks, along with third Mike Badiuk (Devlin) and second Todd Moxham (Fort Frances), emerged victorious from the 18-team field with a single while holding last-rock advantage after Broman had tied it 6-6 in the eighth end.
In the ‘B’-event final, Lorne Jackson of Fort Frances and his team of third and brother Derek Jackson, second Cory Labbe, and lead Ed Vold topped Tom Mayer of International Falls 8-6.
Taking the ‘C’-event crown in an all-Fort showdown was Jon Yellowega, whose rink put on a defensive showcase in downing Don DeBenedet 6-1.
The “Skins Game” featured Bill Hudson (Fort Frances) against Scott Laven of Superior, Wis.
Laven’s crew held all six skins after six ends–leading to Hudson throwing in the towel and forfeiting the last two ends.
But in a sign of great sportsmanship, Laven and his team decided to split the 32 steaks his team received with Hudson’s crew.
In other news, the local club begins its playoffs Monday in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
A new format this year will see the finals held all on one day (April 8), along with the annual wind-up banquet that evening.
