Grozelle advances to national roll-offs

Jen Grozelle finished with a +481 to capture top spot in the women’s division at the provincial P.O.A. championships in Timmins last weekend.
The Fort Frances bowler also qualified for the Northern Ontario team that will compete at the national championships in Saskatoon in May.
Grozelle, a first-time bowler who carries a 114 average in the local Sunday night mixed league, averaged 162.10 over 10 games at Timmins, which included a high single of 245.
That helped the Sunset Country women’s team to a second-place finish with a +567 total overall among the six zones competing at Timmins.
Nickel District won the division with a +582 total.
Lori Pattison of Fort Frances also was on the ladies’ team, averaging 189.20 over the 10 games to finish at -198.
Rounding out the team were Lisa Sanders (Dryden), Shelly Gushulak (Dryden), and Lana Kooshet (Kenora).
Meanwhile, three local bowlers—Ed Larocque, Rob Ducharme, and Blake Kesick—helped the Sunset Country men’s team to a second-place finish at Timmins with a +488 total.
The team also included Garry Ogier and Jeff Lyons (both of Atikokan).
Ducharme finished the 10 games at +201, including a high game of 213, Kesick wound up at +115, including a high game of 235, and Larocque ended up at +86, including a high game of 270.
Gold Belt won the division with a +894 total.
And in the high-low doubles event, Tracy Webb and Robert Bombay of Fort Frances teamed up to finish 10th overall in the 12-team field (each zone had two teams).
Bombay averaged 198 over the 10 games to finish at +100, including a high single of 302, while Webb averaged 171.10 to wind up at -159 for a combined score of -59.
Her high single was a 247.
Overall, Sunset Country finished in third place with an aggregate score of 33 points, behind Gold Belt (with 66) and Nickel District (45).
In other bowling news, a contingent of bowlers from Plaza Lanes will be in Dryden this weekend for the annual aggregate tournament.
Men’s, women’s, and mixed scratch team, as well as men’s, women’s, and mixed handicap quintets, will be squaring off against their counterparts from Atikokan, Kenora, and host Dryden over seven games.
The club garnering the most points overall will take home the aggregate banner.
