The Muskie junior girls’ volleyball team coaches danced their way into different roles before their team turned the court into a mosh pit of doom for the visitors.
Fort High (1-0) kicked off its NorWOSSA regular-season with a solid 3-1 victory (25-17, 20-25, 25-12, and 25-10) over the Kenora Broncos (0-1) here yesterday.
“It was good . . . it took four sets but we got the win,” noted Kirsten Talsma, who has exchanged roles with Jocelyn White and is now head coach, with White serving as her assistant.
“We’re starting to figure out who already understands what’s going on,” she noted.
The black-and-gold took three of the four matches with the Broncos yesterday, sweeping the girls’ volleyball side of things while splitting their results in boys’ basketball.
In senior girls’ spike action, Fort High (1-0) swept Kenora (0-1) by scores of 25-9, 25-15, and 25-15.
As for basketball, the Muskie senior boys (1-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter en route to handily defeating Kenora (0-1) 52-36.
Kevin Metke soared and scored his way to a game-high 18 points while Kirk Johnson chipped in with eight.
Connor Bujold and Alex Gustafson added four apiece.
The only Muskie squad not to break into the win column here yesterday was the junior boys’ hoops squad (0-1), which struggled on offence for most of the game in falling 39-30 to Kenora (1-0).
Cole Kowalski led the Muskie attack with 16 points.
It was the Muskies’ first game since losing 34-18 to the Broncos to finish sixth at their home tournament this past weekend.
Kowalski headed the Fort with nine points in that one.
Doug deBernardeaux had four, Teruo Skead added three, and Aaron Bujold tacked on a pair.
Fort High was nipped 40-38 by the Rainy River Owls in the tourney opener last Friday afternoon.
Kowalski netted eight points in a losing cause while deBernardeaux had seven and Levi Maxton six.
The Muskies regrouped and dumped Dryden 45-29 in their second game, outscoring the Eagles 18-6 in the second half.
Top scorers were unavailable.
All four court teams will be in Dryden this Tuesday for their final league action before the Christmas break.
The Muskies’ next home games are slated for Tuesday, Jan. 6 against those same Eagles.
