Alex McDonald of Devlin tied for fifth place in the boys’ 17 and up division at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Manitoba Series held July 2-3 at the Selkirk Golf Club.
McDonald, 17, who golfs out of the Heron Landing course at Couchiching, carded rounds of 83 and 78 for a 161 total to tie Nick Palaschuk of the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club.
Derrik Goodwin, 18, of Winnipeg, representing the Wildwood Golf Club, took top honours with a 154 total.
McDonald, however, was the divisional winner among the boys in the Mr. Lube long drive competition.
Meanwhile, McDonald’s brother, Brad, finished in ninth place in the boys’ 14-16 division in Selkirk.
The 16-year-old fired rounds of 89 and 77 to finish with a 166 total.
Charlie Boyechko of Winnipeg, representing the Southwood Golf and Country Club, led the way with a 150 total for a three-shot victory over Zac Klassen of Winkler.
Boyechko pulled ahead of a three-way tie for first with Klassen and Scott Mazur (Winnipeg) after day one with a stellar final round 73 to claim the title.
He also earned an exemption into a Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) event with his low overall score.
The MJT finishes its Manitoba season on Aug. 18-19 with the MJT-Manitoba PGA Junior Championship at the Transcona Golf Club in Winnipeg, which also is a qualifier for CAN-USA team matches at ASU’s Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Ariz. in December.
