Golfers ‘hack’ up Kitchen Creek

Nearly 120 golfers, all sporting handicaps of 16 and over, showed up at Kitchen Creek Golf Course on Sunday to tear up the links in the annual Frog Creek Open–literally.
“Everybody enjoyed the day. The weather was great, the beer was cold, and the golf was secondary,” laughed club pro Steve Wood.
“It was a lot of fun,” enthused Donna Lee, who defended her ladies’ crown with a 94 on Sunday. “This is a good event for people with a 16+ handicap.”
“I played very poorly on the front nine and very well on the back,” she noted Monday morning. “I shot 52 on the front and 42 on the back nine.
“My goal of the tournament was to take 10 strokes off the back nine and I did that,” she remarked.
Lee said because she played so poorly in the club championship the previous weekend, she just wanted to have a decent round Sunday.
“I did play well on the back nine but I am still not happy with the front,” she laughed. “A good score for me would have been to break 90.”
John Dupuis topped the men after carding an 83.
Since Lee is the defending ladies champion, she knows what it takes to organize a tournament like this but stressed it’s not as hard as everyone thinks.
“Karl Willemsen and Steve Wood carried a lot of the weight of organizing the tournament [this year],” she said. “I got a list of previous sponsors and took a letter to them and went back a week later to pick up the prizes.
“The business support in this community is good for events like this,” Lee added.
“The winners were happy that they won,” said Wood. “Having the winners organize it keeps the tournament within the community and keeps [it] growing.”
