With its first big tournament of the season looming this weekend, the Fort Frances Girls’/Women’s Hockey Association provided plenty of exciting action over the past week.
Fort Frances Novice Lions Club edged the Emo Express 2-1 last Thursday (Jan. 29).
Jersey Rose and Hayden Allam scored for the Fort while Karsyn McQuaker replied for Emo.
That same evening, the Fort Frances BDO Canada Stars and Fort Frances Gillons’ battled to a 1-1 in PeeWee play.
Shallin Scott-MacNeil tallied for the Stars (the Gillons’ goal scorer was unavailable at press time).
On Friday, the Fort Frances Atom Calder Legal Eagles played to a 2-2 tie against the Fort Frances Novice Times Tigers (FFMHA).
Goal scorers were unavailable.
In Bantam ‘AA’ action, the Fort Frances Leafs topped Lake of the Woods 5-4 on Saturday.
Siobhan Mackintosh had a hat trick for the Leafs while Maddy Morrison netted the other two goals.
Meanwhile, the FFGWHA will be in the spotlight this weekend as it hosts its annual Atom and Novice tournaments at the Memorial Sports Centre.
Four teams will be in the mix for the Atom title, including the Legal Eagles, the Express, the Kenora Crush, and the Kenora Surge.
It will be a six-team clash in the Novice division, with the Lions Club, Fort Frances Tim Hortons, and Emo joined by the Dryden Icebergs, the Kenora Vipers, and the Kenora Ninjas.
Action gets underway tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. and Saturday at 9:15 a.m.
The playoffs in both divisions go Sunday.
The Novice final is set for 12:30 p.m. while the Atom final goes at 2 p.m.
