Girls’ hockey awards banquet goes tonight

The 2010/11 season for the Fort Frances Girls Hockey Association officially will come an end tonight as its annual dinner and awards banquet is held at the arena auditorium.
Along with handing out awards to players on each of the 12 teams in the FFGHA, a draw will be held, with two lucky winners getting $100 off their league registration for next season.
One of the 12 teams that will be honoured tonight finished off its season on a winning note last weekend in Winnipeg.
The Dynamic Homes Hurricanes Atom competitive team took home the gold medal in the Atom A1 division at the Stars Cup for Life tournament.
The Hurricanes edged the Dakota Lasers 3-2 to capture the title thanks to a goal and two assists from Annalise Hayes.
Jenna Clendenning and Maighyn DeGagne also hit the twine in the final, with Clendenning earning the game’s MVP award.
After dropping their opener to the Brandon Ice Cats, the Hurricanes knocked off the West Kildonan Cougars and the Winnipeg city champion Archwood Stars in their final two round-robin games to punch their ticket to the final.
Solid goaltending also was an essential part in helping the Hurricanes get to the final.
Sydney Beck and Kamryn Sandelovich both made key saves when called upon, with the latter picking up player-of-the-game honours in the 3-1 triumph over the Stars.
