Girls celebrate weekend of hockey

The 10th-annual Fort Frances Girls Hockey Association Pee Wee and Bantam hockey tournament wrapped up yesterday, amid congratulations from those in attendance.
The popular 17 team tournament, featured nine Pee Wee teams and eight Bantam squads from around the region, including International Falls, Baudette, and Greenway, Min.
Locally, on the Pee Wee side Taylor International Trucking and the BDO Stars played hard and fast all weekend. After three close losses, Taylor International dominated the Dryden PT Cruisers 5-2 to earn a rematch with the Cruisers in the Sunday playoff.
Dryden claimed the play off game with a 2-1 win. The BDO Stars dropped a pair of heartbreakers on Friday, but came back strong on Saturday to win 3-2 over the Cruisers and 3-1 over the Dryden Herricanes to earn a spot in the sixth place playoff game against Greenway—eventually dropping a close 1-0 decision to the Pee Wee Raiders.
On the Bantam side, both the Pinewood Blades and Kitowski Trucking had banner weekends. The Blades finished the round robin portion with two wins and a loss, while Kitowski ended at 1-1-1.
Both teams advanced to the championship round semi-finals on Saturday night, with Kitowski dropping an overtime thriller 5-4 to the Dryden Hot Shots, and the Blades surrendering a late goal to fall 2-1 to the Dryden Shooters.
The bronze medal match produced one of the finest games of the tournament as Kitowski edged the Blades 5-4. The Dryden Shooters won gold with a 1-0 victory over the Dryden Hot Shots.
