Gillons’ leads both soccer leagues

If Curves and Taggs were thinking they could sleepwalk to a pair of championship repeats this season, both Gillons’ teams just gave them a wake-up call.

Meanwhile, Curves had all guns blazing in their season-opener as they routed Taggs 10-0 on June 3.
Roy netted a hat trick to lead the team while Ashley Wilson, Mandy Wilson, and Nicole Rogozinski each had a pair. Hillary Morgan rounded out the scoring.
Gillons’ and Taggs were scheduled to meet last night (the score was not available at press time).
In men’s action, Gillons’ (2-0) mirrored their female counterparts by pulling off a 3-2 win over Taggs (2-1) on Monday night.
Jamie Algie netted the winning goal against the 10-time defending league champs, who were forced to play a man short after losing Eddy Louisy to a red card infraction part way through the game.
Dan Poperechny and Matt Basaraba had the other goals for Gillons’ while Taggs got its offence from Mike Webb and Olaf Ruppenstein.
Taggs had kicked off its season June 2 with a dominating 7-1 win over Nova (1-2). Ruppenstein drilled a pair of goals in that one, with Louisy, Chris Wiedenhoeft, Scott Gurski, Josiah Morris, and Jim Nussbaumer adding singles.

Gillons’ added to Nova’s woes the following night as Adam McTavish’s pair of tallies sparked them to a 5-2 victory.
Jeremy Wilson, Greg Hammer, and Tyler Barker added singles for Gillons’ while Steve Keesik and Shawn Councillor replied for Nova.
Taggs used four first-half goals to pave its way to a 5-0 shutout over ITS (0-2) last Wednesday. Ruppenstein, Louisy, Wiedenhoeft, Webb, and Jeff Campbell were the goal scorers.
ITS had chances to earn their first point of the season the following night, but a pair of defensive miscues and two missed penalty kicks sealed their fate in a 2-0 loss to Nova.
