The Muskie football team found out first-hand yesterday afternoon why the Elmwood Giants are among the top teams in the WHSFL’s Currie Division.
The visitors cruised to a 39-1 victory at Muskie Field, improving to a perfect 5-0 while the black-and-gold dropped to 1-4.
Fort High did drive down the field in the first half to make things interesting, but some costly turnovers proved to be their undoing as the Muskies trailed 18-1 at the break.
“The first half was definitely better than the second half for us,” noted Muskie head coach Chad Canfield.
“The offensive line was opening up some big holes for us, and I think we gained more yards in the first half of this game than we did in the last two games combined.
“We just couldn’t punch it in, though, and that was pretty frustrating as we should have got points on those drives,” Canfield sighed.
The Muskies’ lone score came on the opening play of the game when they kicked the ball through the end zone.
The Giants then pounded away with their rushing attack in the second half, with Tyree Cayer, Carlo Torres, and Josh Smith all scoring touchdowns.
Cayer also rushed for a touchdown in the first half of the game while quarterback Kingsley Khamphavong burst into the end zone himself to open the scoring for Elmwood.
“It was a different type of game for us,” noted Giants’ head coach Nathan Falk.
“There were a lot of penalties and turnovers, which is something we aren’t used to seeing, so we had to kind of fight through that and keep our heads in the game,” he stressed.
“Our defence shut them down to a single point, and that really kept us going until the offence started to come around later on.”
The Muskies next will take on the Dryden Eagles in a rare night game next Friday (Oct. 14).
Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
