Geurts, Amorde capture silver medals at Winter Games

Terri Geurts and Allison Amorde, both bowlers from Plaza Lanes here, led the “Northwestern” ladies’ five-pin team to a silver medal at the Ontario Winter Games in Peterborough last week.
“Northwestern” finished the tournament with eight wins against six losses, good for 63 points, and second only to the “Central” team, which won the gold with a 12-2 record for 89 points.
“Huronia” captured the bronze medal with 58 points.
Geurts finished with 3,393 pins in 14 games while Amorde had a 2,950 total.
Meanwhile, Chris Stamarski, who also bowls out of Plaza Lanes here, bowled a 410 score to record the high men’s single game at Peterborough.
He finished with a 3,345 total in 14 games to help the men’s “Northwestern” team to six wins against seven losses and a tie to finish in fifth place with 53 points–just two back of “Northeastern.”
Cambridge & District finished first with 78 points, ahead of Metro Toronto (74) and Grand River (63).
Stamarski and Amorde also are competing in the senior singles’ division as members of the Sunset Country team in Sudbury this weekend.
Joining them at the provincials will be the local junior team of Amanda Still, Megan Bale, Cristy Beadle, Bobbi-Jo McCoy, Jenna Howells, and coach Sharon Larocque.
Meanwhile, the local trio of Toni Bale, Michael Pattison, and Melanie Rogers were the top team at the Master/Bantam championships held Saturday in Dryden.
Aggregate roll-offs
In other bowling news, Dryden bowled their way to the Sunset Country zone aggregate banner after finishing in first place in the four-team tournament with 46 points.
Kenora finished second with 35 points, followed by Atikokan (20) and Fort Frances (19).
Fort Frances placed second in the ladies’ handicap team event (9,197 total) and third in the ladies’ scratch division (8,191). They finished fourth in the mixed handicap event (8,652), second in mixed scratch (7,887), third in men’s handicap (8,702), and third in men’s scratch (8,366).
But several local bowlers achieved high single games in their respective divisions, including Janet Ellis (335 in the ladies’ handicap division) and Rick Stamarski (318 in the men’s scratch division).
Kayne Shaw had a total pinfall of 1,941 in the ladies’ handicap singles division (eight-game total including handicap) to finish in third place while Andy Crook also placed third with a 1,953 total in the men’s division.
