The outgoing president and one of the founders of the FFHS Athletic Association executive was heavily-honoured at the Muskies’ awards banquet last night.
Andrew George, who graduates this year after playing basketball and football for Fort High, was named the ‘A’ football team’s MVP, winner of the Brent Ogden Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and perseverance, the male winner of the OFSAA Colin Hood Award, and the Mike Smith Award.
The Colin Hood Award is given to one male and one female graduating athlete in every school in OFSAA who was an above average student as well as an athlete in at least two sports and on at least six teams.
The female award winner was Amanda Allan, a Muskie soccer and volleyball player.
There also is a Colin Hood Award for a teacher/coach, which was presented to Struchan Gilson.
For the Mike Smith Award, an athlete is nominated by a representative from each school in NorWOSSA. A committee then looks at each of the nominees and selects one athlete based on their level of commitment to the school and school athletics.
When presenting the award, Fort High co-athletic director Darren Johnson asked George to make a name for himself after high school so they could begin presenting the Andrew George Award in a few years time.
George said he had learned a lot of important things during his time as a Muskie.
“It’s not about playing the game, it’s about what you learn,” he told the crowd on hand at La Place Rendez-Vous. “I learned something from every sport.”
