Alex Booth handled the clutch scoring; Hayden Beckett looked after the big-time stopping.
Booth made good on his chance in the fourth round of the shootout while Beckett thwarted four of five shooters to lead the Fury to a 3-2 triumph over the Borderland Hawks in the Atom division final Sunday at the fourth-annual Chuck McPherson Youth Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Couchiching Arena.
Neither team scored in the first two rounds of the shootout before Riley Windego and Hunter McLean traded goals in the third round.
Booth then beat Hawks’ goalie Jarrett Aucoin before Beckett went on to deny Griffin Webb and Dakota Cooper to ice the victory.
Windego forced overtime–and the eventual shootout–with his equalizer with 5:35 to go.
A.J. Armstrong put the Hawks on the board in the first.
Then after Jack Davis evened the score, Webb gave Borderland a 2-1 lead with his second-period tally.
With the win, the Fury avenged their 6-2 loss to the Hawks during round-robin play.
Logan Pierce led Borderland with four goals in that game, with Kale Nelson and Niko Ruppenstein adding singles.
Davis and Gage Mitchell replied for the Fury, who opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over the Sand Bay Challengers.
Landon Flinders scored twice for the victors while Lucas Bailey and Mitchell got the other goals.
Jake Evans had the lone goal for the Challengers.
Davis then struck for two goals in a 4-1 defeat of the Fort Frances Atom Competitive Leafs girls’ team.
Bailey and Windego had the other markers while Courtney McCoy scored for the Leafs.
Borderland blanked the Leafs 3-0 in its first outing, with Logan Pierre accounting for all the offence.
The Hawks then dumped Sand Bay 7-0 in their third contest, led by Armstrong’s hat trick.
Cooper, McLean, Pierre, and Brett Brown netted the other goals while Aucoin earned the shutout.
The Leafs edged Sand Bay 2-1 to claim the bronze medal.
Eva Gerstner tallied the game-winner with 7:42 to play to go along with an earlier marker by Piper Miller.
Madison Bliss got the win in goal.
Tucker Calder notched Sand Bay’s lone goal.
The Challengers did come away with one win at the tournament, nipping the Leafs 3-2 in the round-robin.
Izzy Tanguay, Jordan Hunter, and Calder scored for Sand Bay while Kiera Fairnington had one of the Leafs’ goals (the other scorer was unavailable at press time).
