Being new to the scene, Molly Carlson decided to just dive right in and see what happened.
What the Fort Frances native found was fourth place to make her the highest-finishing freshman in the women’s 3m springboard event at the ACC swimming and diving championships held Monday in Atlanta.
Representing the Florida State Seminoles, Carlson has the fourth-best mark in the preliminaries with 317.20 points, then upped her game to collect 335.10 in the final.
“What an amazing day!” Carlson posted in a Facebook message afterwards.
“First event at my first ACC’s with a fourth-place finish after diving my heart out,” she noted.
“Only missed one dive but as a freshman, I couldn’t be happier.
“So many screaming teammates by my side, I’m so honoured to be a part of such a supportive team,” Carlson wrote.
“Molly dove exceptionally well today,” FSU diving head coach John Proctor said on www.seminoles.com
“She’s used to the big stage, and she stepped up and performed really well,” he lauded.
“In finals, she nailed five of her six dives and I’m really proud of her for that.”
Carlson pulled down 50 points on five of her six dives, including a total of 68.60 on her reverse 2.5 somersault tuck, which was the highest score of the round.
Ashlynn Peters (Virginia Tech Hokies) soared from seventh in the preliminaries (301.85) to win the event final (365.95).
Carlson returned to action last night in the 1m event (results unavailable at press time).
She also is likely to enter the platform event today.
