Four local gymnasts strike gold in Red Lake

The Fort Frances Visserettes and Boys Gymnastics Club travelled to Red Lake last weekend to compete in the second regional meet of Fort Frances.
John Ans and Joshua Stromness competed at Regional Level 1 for boys. Ans placed first on floor, buckhorse, rings, vault, and high bar and second on parallel bars for a gold medal all-around.
Stromness placed first on parallel bars, and second on floor, rings, buckhorse; vault and high bar for a silver medal all around.
Travis Hahkala competed at the Prov. Sparx level. He placed first on floor, parallel bars, and high bar, and second on buck horse, rings, and vault for an all-around silver medal placing.
Stephanie Logan, competing in the provincial senior open-category, placed first in every event with a total score of 29.20 and received a gold medal all-around.
Hillary Morgan and Sam Pearson competed at the provincial junior level. Morgan placed first on vault, beam, and floor and second on bars for an all-around gold-medal placing.
Pearson placed first on bars and second on vault, beam, and floor for a silver medal all around placing.
In the regional 1A category, Janelle Williamson brought home the silver medal while Michelle McFayden placed fourth in her very first meet. Jill Howarth came fifth all around.
Alana Makinson brought home the gold medal for the 1B level. She had a great meet and will be looking forward to defending her title here in Fort Frances at the Springfest Invitational on April 10-11.
This meet usually brings some 100 gymnasts to town.
Joleen Debenetti and Stephanie Logan coached the girls while Susie Grynol, Mohamed Somji, and Joel Perron judged at the provincial level. Maureen and Arlan Hahkala coached the boys. Joel Perron also judged the boys at the provincial level.
The boys will be hosting provincial qualifier on March 6.
Meanwhile, two athletes from the Fort Frances Trampoline Club will be travelling to Ottawa on Feb. 12 to compete in a provincial qualifier, Susie Grynol will compete at the novice national level while Hilary Morgan will compete Provincial 2.
The rest of the team will be preparing for the next qualifier in Thunder Bay on Feb. 21.
The Fort Frances Trampoline Club is selling tickets on a Mini-Caravan, two camcorders, and a trip to Disneyland to help defray the expenses of the travelling team and coaches.
