Fort to host soccer tourney

A three-day soccer tournament will be held this weekend at the St. Francis pitches, with eight teams competing in the men’s division and four among the women.
“There are teams coming from Thunder Bay, Kenora, and Dryden, and, of course, local teams such as AAA, Nova, Tagg’s, ITS, MEC, Merchants, and Causeway will be playing in the tournament,” organizer Thor Ruppenstein said Tuesday.
In men’s action, the eight teams will be divided into two pools of four in round-robin play, with the top two squads from each pool advancing to the playoffs Sunday morning.
Play will open Friday at 7 p.m. with the AAA Thunder taking on Nova (Field #1) and Tagg’s meeting ITS (Field #2).
“We thought we may as well get the local games out of the way instead of cramming all the games into Saturday,” noted Ruppenstein.
The top team in Pool ‘A’ will meet the runner-up in Pool ‘B’ in one semi-final Sunday at 10:30 a.m. while the winner of Pool ‘B’ takes on the second-place team from Pool ‘A’ in the other.
The two semi-final losers will meet in the consolation final Sunday at 2 p.m., with the two winners squaring off for the tourney title at 4 p.m.
On the women’s side, the four teams will play a round-robin format, with the top two squads meeting in the final Sunday at 2 p.m.
Women’s action will begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with MEC versus Merchants (Field #1) and Causeway against the Dryden Shooters (Field #2).
Round-robin play continues Saturday at 3 p.m. and then wraps up Sunday at 9 a.m.
