Senior athletes (aged 55+) should start gearing up for the District 1A Senior Games being held in Fort Frances this year.
The games, to be held June 5-6 at various venues in town, are held every two years and are comprised of a variety of recreational events.
They are open to residents of the Kenora/Patricia and Rainy River districts who are 55+ years of age as of Dec. 31, 2018.
The Games focus on promoting an active lifestyle in an atmosphere of fun, fellowship, and friendly competition featuring individuals ranging in age from 55 to the mid-90s.
They are designed for all to take part in regardless of skill level.
The Games will include competition in sanctioned events such as billiards, five-pin bowling, floor shuffleboard, golf, darts, swimming, and carpet bowling, as well as Cribbage, Euchre, Bid Euchre, and Contract Bridge.
Non-sanctioned events include table shuffleboard, Smear, and horseshoes.
This year, organizers are hoping to add a number of new events, such as tennis, pickleball, and walk/run, if conveners for these can be found.
Anyone interested in convening an event should contact Cindy Noble at the Fort Frances Seniors’ Centre (Sister Kennedy Centre).
The District 1A Senior Games will start with an opening ceremony at the local seniors’ centre at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, with games to start immediately following it.
A banquet for participants will be held at the local Legion later Tuesday.
Additional tickets for non-participating guests will be available for $25 each.
Winners of sanctioned games will be eligible to compete in the Ontario Senior Games, which are being held Aug. 12-14 in Mississauga.
The participation fee for the District 1A Seniors Games is $35, which includes lunch on both days of the competition as well as the banquet.
Participants may compete in as many as four different events for the same fee (those taking part in golf and bowling will have additional costs for green fees and lineage fees).

The deadline for registration is May 29.
The Games’ co-ordinators are hoping for a good turnout of senior athletes both locally and from throughout the area.
