Two years into the program, organization of Fort High’s golf club is getting a little better.
The club, which has seven student members, ran a tournament at Kitchen Creek Golf Course here last week, coming in fourth, with Red Lake taking first place.
The highlight of the tournament was a hole-in-one by Chris Gardner of Dryden, said Fort High teacher/coach John Gibson.
The Fort High club will attend two more tournaments this spring, including one next Monday (May 31) in Sioux Lookout (tee-off is at 9:30 a.m.)
Their final tournament of the year is slated June 8 in Kenora. They also played in three tournaments last fall.
The club will resume action Sept. 7-10 in Red Lake.
“It doesn’t run as a school sport, it’s just a club under the school,” noted Gibson. “It’s a little more rigorous this year. They actually have a set schedule.”
Five of the six tournaments the club competes in over the year are exhibition and one (in the fall) is an NWOSSAA tournament.
“Our association against SSSAA,” said Gibson.
Fort High also has been competing against U.S. schools, playing in one tournament in International Falls two weeks ago as an exhibition.
Steve Pruys, Scott Bridgeman, Scott Basaraba, Steve Krag, Clinton Crowe, and Kyle Perrott make up the boys’ side of the club. Kate Bondett is the lone female member.
To get a score for tournaments, the club takes the best four scores from the six male players and totals them.
