Fort girls win consolation final

The Pollard Lumber Atom/Novice girls’ hockey team won the consolation final at a tournament in Dryden after shutting out the host team 4-0 on Sunday.
Courtney Caldwell paced the locals with two goals while Teresa Smith and Melissa Calder (named the Fort’s game star) also scored.
Katie Stearns was solid in goal to earn the shutout.
Pollard Lumber was relegated to the consolation final after losing 5-1 to C.J. Edwards (Kenora). Caldwell scored the lone goal while Danielle Gibson was named the team’s game star.
They had opened the tourney with a 5-4 loss to Royal Purple (Kenora), then rebounded with a solid 5-0 shutout against Dryden.
Calder (named the game star) had two against Kenora, with Caldwell and Carly Holt adding singles. Calder scored twice more against Dryden (again being named the game star), with Holt (two) and Kali Hamilton rounding out the scoring.
Katie Stearns earned the shutout in goal in that one.
Meanwhile, the D&A Construction Bantam/Midget girls’ team lost a heart-breaking 1-0 decision to the LOW (Kenora) Muskies in double overtime of the consolation final of a five-team tourney up there.
Tied 0-0 after regulation time, the first overtime settled nothing. In the second extra frame, the teams ended up playing 1-on-1 before the game eventually was decided on a penalty shot.
The Fort had advanced to the consolation final after shutting out Dryden Husky 5-0 (no goal scorers were available). Kim Fowler and Angela Shoemaker shared the goaltending duties to earn the shutout.
D&A Construction had opened the tournament with three straight losses, including a 4-3 setback to the Thunder Bay Ice Gators despite Jen Caul’s hat trick.
Then they were blanked 3-0 by the Thunder Bay Panthers before losing 4-1 to the LOW Muskies. Ivory Tuesday scored the lone Fort goal in that game.
In other tournament action in Dryden, the Floor Coverings International PeeWee team lost all three of their round-robin games.
They opened with a 9-0 loss to the Thunder Bay Ice Cats, then were bounced 8-1 by the Dryden Demons and 7-1 to the Dryden Steelers. Darcy Smith scored both Fort Frances goals.
Next tournament for Floor Coverings International is next month in Warroad. Fort Frances also will be hosting a tournament here and in Emo in March.
