As the snow melts, Fort Frances Youth Soccer (FFYS) is hoping to get underway a little earlier than in past years. Registration is open now until March 31.

There has been one major change this year. The youngest division, squirts, for children ages four and five at the end of 2024 will have the option to play once a week or twice.

FFYS board member Penny Hutton says they heard some parents might be interested in having their kids just play once so they put it to a poll on the FFYS Facebook page.

“[Someone] suggested that we consider doing the squirts on only one night a week,” Hutton said. “So we were like ‘ok that makes sense, but we also know there’s kids that want to play too, so let’s do a poll,’ so we did a poll on Facebook and it came out 50-50.”

The decision was to experiment this year with allotting half of the squirts registration slots to one day per week and half of the slots to twice a week. There will be 60 slots each. The teams playing one night a week will play Tuesdays with the option for a make up day on Thursdays if a Tuesday gets rained out.

The hope is to get the season underway in the first week of May on Wednesday May 6.

“The plan as long as the weather cooperates is to start on May 6 then end on June 15,” Hutton said. “With a Saturday wind-up. We usually go right to the end of school but we thought with the Saturday after school being the 22 people make plans to go camping or whatever, so we’re just going to wrap it up a week earlier so people that last week to focus on grads and whatever else is happening.”

FFYS also has a great need for volunteers to help coach and organize. Youth interested in becoming referees may also receive payment.

“We have a board that consists of about seven people and there’s 500-plus kids. It’s a lot of organizing,” Hutton said. “All of our board members also coach so they don’t have a lot of time during that six week window to actually really do board things. So we would love to get some more people involved on the board level. People should realize especially for squirts, division one and division two you don’t really need to know that much about soccer drills. We give suggested things that they can do with the kids and we would never put somebody, when it’s their first time coaching, by themselves.”

If people are interested in taking a refereeing clinic FFYS will cover the cost of certification as they have in past years, though the practical part of the certification course will take place in Dryden this year. Anyone looking for more information about volunteering or becoming a referee can contact FFYS at ffys.soccer@gmail.com

Registration is available at ffys.goalline.ca and will close after March 31. Because of the need to get things organized– making up teams and ordering t-shirts– no further registrations will be accepted after the cutoff. T-shirts will, once again be sponsored once again by the Beyak Auto Group.
