Former Fort Frances resident James Knoff left Winnipeg to visit his old stomping grounds and showed he can still swing a squash raquet.
Knoff captured the ‘A/B’ event of the annual Fort Frances Boxing Day squash tournament after downing runner-up Jason Kabel 3-1 in the final here Tuesday afternoon.
Knoff, who plays ‘A’ level squash in Winnipeg, was expected to do well in the tournament. And he didn’t disappoint, sweeping his other two matches before beating Kabel.
“I was happy to just get one victory off him,” noted Kabel.
The annual tournament featured five competitors in the ‘A/B’ event, including consolation winner Benj Andrusco, Toby Munro, and John Steele.
In the ‘C’ event, Gord Kitzul, another former resident now living in Texas, topped the field after blanking Paul Visser 3-0 in the final. Bill Naturkach won the consolation final over Bill Daley (3-0).
John Hazel and Michael Whitehead also competed in the ‘C’ division.
And in the ‘D’ event, Steve Krag swept Jon Patrick 3-0 in the final while Ryan Holt captured the consolation title over Dave York (3-0).
Adam Bowes was the other competitor in that division.
As always, the tourney was capped off with refreshments and snacks for the participants after they worked off their Christmas dinners in the squash court.
