Former Laker nabs award

Fort Frances native Brandon Bodnar’s impressive season just got a whole lot better.
The SIJHL announced yesterday that the Thunder Bay North Stars’ goalie has been named its top goaltender award recipient for the 2017-18 season.
On the year, the former Fort Frances Laker led all goalies in wins while going 23-7-2-1 overall with a 2.64 GAA and .918 save percentage.
Bodnar’s league-best eight shutouts were just two shy of the SIJHL single-season record of 10, set by current St. Louis Blues’ goalie Carter Hutton during the 2005-06 campaign, where he also helped lead the North Stars to a Bill Salonen Cup crown, a Dudley-Hewitt Cup title and a semi-final berth at the RBC Cup.
Bodnar garnered the accolade over fellow top goaltender award finalists Bailey Schmitz of the Thief River Falls Norskies and Michael Lenko of the English River Miners in voting conducted by each of the SIJHL’s six member clubs.
Bodnar spent two seasons with the Lakers, the first coming in 2015-16 where he compiled a 18-4-0-0 record, 1.94 GAA, and a .935 save percentage.
Then the following season Bodnar went 10-10-2-2 with a 3.08 GAA and a .912 save percentage before he was dealt to the North Stars for a player development fee that summer.
In other news, the SIJHL also announced yesterday the full schedule for the best-of-seven semi-final series between the first-place Dryden GM Ice Dogs and the fifth-ranked Lakers.
The Memorial Arena in Dryden will play host to Games 1 and 2 tomorrow and Saturday, both at 7:30 p.m.
Fort Frances then will host Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday, April 3 and Thursday, April 5 at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Both contests will be a 7:30 p.m. puck-drop.
Game 5, if necessary, will be at the Memorial Arena in Dryden on Sunday, April 8 at 4 p.m.
Game 6, if necessary, will be played back here on Monday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Should the series end up going the distance, Game 7 would be played at the Memorial Arena in Dryden on Wednesday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m.
