It was a streak the Muskie football team was eager to finally put behind them.
The squad earned its first WHSFL win in almost two years with a 9-7 comeback victory over the host St. John’s Tigers (0-2) in Winnipeg on Friday afternoon.
Muskie head coach Chad Canfield said the game was a defensive struggle—scoreless until quarterback Tobijah Gerber hooked up with receiver Colton Craig for a 35-yard touchdown strike early in the fourth quarter.
The convert was unsuccessful so Fort High led 6-0.
The Tigers rumbled back near the end of regulation time, punching in a major and making the ensuing convert to grab a 7-6 lead with about three minutes to go.
But Gerber hit Brad McDonald for a big gain in the dying moments to set up a field goal try by John Colfer.
And he made no mistake, splitting the uprights for the 9-7 win.
It was the first time the Muskies beat a WHSFL opponent since downing the Maples Marauders 22-14 back on Sept. 25, 2008.
The Muskies (1-1) next will host the Daniel McIntyre Maroons in the annual Homecoming game this Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Muskie Field.
Daniel Mac has won its first two games of the season, downing Stonewall 23-7 before pounding Sisler 41-21.
