The hope is summer will stick around for a while yet, but the Muskie football fall camp starts today and runs all week from 6 p.m. until dark.
Positions on this year’s team are wide open with a lot of turnover from a season ago—giving added importance to training camp as the Muskies are set to open play Sept. 11 with a road battle against the Kenora Broncos.
The black-and-gold also will face some new adversity this coming season with a slew of new teams in Tier II of the Winnipeg High School Football League.
The Kas Vidruk Division—an eight-team circuit a year ago—has been expanded to include 13 teams and has been split into two conferences.
The division includes expansion teams the Vincent Massey Trojans (Winnipeg) as well as three from Brandon (Vincent Massey Vikings, Crocus Plains Plainsmen, and Neelin Spartan).
It also will include the Grant Park Pirates, Miles Mac Buckeyes, and River East Kodiaks, who all were relegated from the Tier I John Potter Division.
The Portage Trojans moved up from Tier III (Andy Currie Division) while the Dryden Eagles dropped down to Tier III.
Last year’s Tier II champs, the Sturgeon Heights Huskies, have moved up to Tier I along with the Garden City Fighting Gophers.
The Muskies are in the West conference along with the Kenora Broncos, Maples Marauders, Miles Mac Buckeyes, St. Paul’s Crusaders, and Neelin Spartans.
