Kyle Herr scored the game-winning goal with about four minutes left to lift the Foodtown Fury to a narrow 1-0 victory over the Red Lake Diggers on Sunday in the final of a 20-team tournament in Dryden.
Ryan Faragher, who was spectacular in goal for the Fury all weekend, earned the shutout. In fact, Foodtown gave up just six goals in seven games during the tournament.
Foodtown reached the final after blanking Sioux Lookout Bowater 2-0 in the semi-finals, with Herr and Evan McCabe netting the goals. Faragher again got the shutout.
But Foodtown almost didn’t make it past their quarter-final game, trailing the Subway Sharks (Kenora) 2-0 late in the second period before mounting a wild comeback.
Herr scored to slice the lead to 2-1, then Matt DePiero scored twice in the third, including the game-winning on a nice pass from Logan Allen.
Foodtown opened the tournament Friday with a 4-1 win over the Petro Canada Senators (Kenora). Herr, Mitchell Carlson, Allen, and McCabe (on a penalty shot) all scored in that one.
On Friday night, the Fury scored a 4-1 win over the Red Lake Gold Corp. Diggers on goals by Herr (two), McCabe, and Allen.
But Foodtown lost their next game Saturday morning 2-0 to the Dryden Sharks, leaving them in a must-win situation against the Dryden Flyers in their last round-robin game in order to finish in first in their pool.
And they delivered, blanking the Flyers 4-0 on goals by Herr (two), DePiero, and Lucas McMahon. Faragher again earned the shutout between the pipes.
West End Motors, the other Fort Frances team competing in the tournament, was bounced 5-4 by the Diggers in the semi-finals.
They had swept through pool play with a 4-0 record, then dumped the Ignace Temple Blues 8-0 in the quarter-finals.
West End dominated their first four games–outscoring the opposition 29-2. Ryan Wood finished with four shutouts in six games.
They opened play with a 7-0 shellacking over the Dryden Canucks and then trounced the Red Lake Campbell Nuggets 8-2. After routing the Kenora KFC Colonels 12-0, they blanked Sioux Lookout Bowater 2-0.
Goal scorers were not available from the West End games because Dryden tournament officials did not provide copies of the game sheets.
