The Sioux Lookout Flyers opened 2009 with a 5-4 overtime win against the Dryden Ice Dogs on Jan. 2—giving them their first victory in their inaugural SIJHL season.
But the win came with some bad news as head coach and general manager Richard Brozinski announced his resignation the following day.
“It is with both regret and anticipation that I submit this letter of resignation, effective Jan. 3, 2009,” the Winnipeg-based Brozinski said in a release. “I have decided to change the course of my current career goals, also me and my wife, Julita, are expecting our second child and will be pursuing a new direction.”
Brozinski joined the team in mid-November after the original general manager and owner, Basil Goodchild, and head coach, Ray Miller, walked off the job.
His role was anticipated to be a temporary one, however, and he appears to have got the team back on the right path toward sustaining the organization for an extended period.
Current owner Doug Lawrance said a replacement has not yet been found, and may not be an option until after this season.
“We just met last night and we’re working on our plan for the rest of the season,” Lawrance said of he and his ownership group. “Whether we bring someone in from out of town may not be feasible at this time.”
Lawrance said “absolutely” to keeping the team in Sioux Lookout, stressing things have been improving both on and off the ice.
“We had about 300 [fans] at the last game, which is great for us,” he added.
The Flyers lost the rematch at home 5-3 against the Ice Dogs on Saturday, dropping their record to 1-29-1 on the campaign.
They next visit the Thunder Bay Bearcats for a pair of games starting Friday.
