Joyce Gosselin of Fort Frances has added a gold medal to her haul at the 2005 Special Olympics Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.
Gosselin took top honours today in the 100m snowshoe event—her favourite. She crossed the finish line in a time of 1:07.55, which was .16 seconds slower than her qualifying time.
Another Canadian, Sara Jane Daigle, claimed the silver medal with a time of 1:23.95.
Marlene Rechberger of Austria, the pre-race favourite, completed the distance in a time of 37.52 but later was disqaulified, giving the gold to Gosselin.
Gosselin, 58, the oldest snowshoe competitor at the Games, collected a silver medal yesterday in the 200m event with a time of 2:36.45—more than four seconds better than her qualifying time of 2:40.89.
Taking first place was Laura Ferraro, 41, of Italy with a blistering time of 2:09.45.
And Gosselin is in line to get either another gold or silver medal on Friday when she runs the lead leg in the 4x100m relay.
Her team—dubbed “Canada Leafs”—finished with a time of 4:06.39 in their qualifying race, well behind Team USA 2, which had a time of 3:21.68.
But only these two teams will be racing in the finals Friday.
