It was a successful host tournament for the newly-minted NorFab Flames PeeWee girls’ rep team over the weekend.
The Flames, enjoying success in their inaugural season, finished the round-robin portion of their tournament on Saturday in first place, but were upset by Dryden 4-3 in the final Sunday afternoon.
The Flames held a 2-1 lead after two periods on goals by Katie Sinclair and Claire Sandelovich, but Dryden scored three goals in the third and then held on for the slim win.
Amber Jourdain did score with under a minute to play to make it close, but the Flames couldn’t convert on the equalizer.
Sandelovich and Shilo Beck were named team MVPs in the final.
NorFab had opened the tournament Saturday with a 3-2 win over the Kenora Muskies. Kenora scored first when Jessica Ricklefs bulged the twine, but Sandelovich netted an unassisted marker just four minutes later to tie the game 1-1.
Taylor Hazel netted another for the Flames in the second to give them a lead, then Danielle Jackson added an insurance marker before the end of the period to give the Flames some breathing room heading into the final frame.
Rylee Smith made it interesting with a goal for Kenora early in the third, but that would be as close as they’d get.
Jackson was named the team’s MVP for her game-winning goal.
NorFab continued their fine play later that day, blanking the Thunder Bay Fury 2-0 in their second game.
Jourdain scored the only goal of the first period while Madisyn DeGagne added another in the third to account for the game’s only scoring.
DeGagne was named the team MVP.
The Flames again showcased a fine defensive effort in their final game Saturday, shutting out Dryden 5-0.
Shanleigh Fryer was named team MVP for her fine effort between the pipes, making several key saves in the first period until the Flames settled in.
Sandelovich led the way offensively with two goals and a pair of assists.
Sinclair, DeGagne, and Jessica Coran added singles in the blowout victory, although Dryden did get the last laugh with the upset win in the final the following day.
The Flames’ next tournament action comes at the Stars Cup on March 27-29 in St. Boniface (Winnipeg).
