The Rainy River Valley Field Naturalists held their annual general meeting Monday evening in Barwick, setting out some of its events for the season, starting with a sign re-erecting next Saturday (Sept. 15).
The group will set up a sign at the head of the Cranberry Peatland Interpretive Trail (at the end of Whitmore Road in Alberton Township) after it needed to be repaired shortly after it was first put up.
“It’s exciting our trail sign is back. It’s been a while,” said RRVFN president Ilka Milne. “It was our showpiece for our trail head. . . .
“It wasn’t any fault of the manufacturer, either, it’s just one of things that happen, so there it is,” she added. “People will be glad to see it back, I’m sure.”
After the sign is up, the group hopes to go canoeing at Sable Island later in the day (time permitting).
The club also secured its up-to-date field checklists for both birds and dragonflies, which are available to the public.
Other upcoming events were discussed Monday night, such as a Thanksgiving weekend hike, an event for November, and the annual Christmas bird count on Dec. 15, which is open to anyone interested in coming out.
Details on all these events are still to be worked out. “We kind of fly by the seat of our pants,” Milne laughed.
Some administrative details also were dealt with at the meeting, including the appointment of a new secretary, Henry Van Ael, and the suspension of the RRVFN’s website “until we can afford one,” said Milne.
