The longer this COVID-19 pandemic drags on, the more popular events in the Rainy River District are being forced to be cancelled.

The annual Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship is the latest casualty as the organizing committee decided last Wednesday to axe this year’s tournament.

The 26th-edition of the three-day tourney, which attracts many anglers from both sides of the border, was slated for July 23-25.

“Given the situation with COVID-19, and taking into account the critical importance of safety for all anglers and volunteers and fans and sponsors and the uncertainty of being able to cross the border, it was decided that cancelling the tournament for this year was the right course of action to take,” said FFCBC co-chairman Wayne “Muff” Allen.

“We would like to thank all sponsors, volunteers, fishermen and the community who have made this a great event,” the FFCBC organizing committee said in a post on the tournament’s Facebook page.

“We look forward to seeing everyone next year. Please stay home and stay safe. Practice social distancing when out in public. Together we can help beat this pandemic.”

As of January 20, the tournament had 53 teams signed up to participate.
