Fort Frances native Ryan Faragher, in his freshman season in NCAA Division I hockey as a goalie for the St. Cloud State Huskies, was honoured as the WCHA Rookie-of-the-Week after a stellar performance last weekend against the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.
Faragher, 21, made 44 saves to earn a 4-0 shutout over the host Sioux on Friday night, in a game where he was a late replacement for injured starter and Phoenix Coyotes’ prospect Mike Lee.
During the game, which was the first conference start for Faragher, the freshman netminder stopped 24 shots in the second period alone, which tied a school record.
Then on Saturday night, Faragher turned aside 23 shots in a 3-1 loss to the Sioux, which saw Faragher’s five-period shutout streak come to an end.
Up next for Faragher, who has a 1-2-0 record and a 2.04 GAA, and the rest of the Huskies will be this weekend against the visiting Wisconsin Badgers.
