The St. Ignatius Falcons used a combination of inside power and outside marksmanship to sweep the Muskie senior boys’ basketball team in the best-of-three NWOSSAA final here over the weekend.
St. Ignatius grabbed a 66-35 win in Game 1 on Friday afternoon, then won 64-30 in Game 2 on Saturday morning to advance to the OFSAA ‘AA’ championship March 7-9 in Timmins.
“It was no secret if we were going to have a chance, we needed to play flawless basketball,” Muskie co-coach Bryce Coyle conceded about trying to upset the undefeated Thunder Bay champs.
“Hats off to them. That’s a strong squad,” he added.
Fort High hung tough for the first half of the first quarter in both games, but eventually succumbed to the Falcons’ full-court pressure defence that forced a bevy of turnovers.
Eddie Omari led St. Ignatius in Game 1 with 16 points.
Jacob Empey and Aaron Kavanagh had seven apiece for the Muskies, who had captured their first NorWOSSA title since 2012 the previous week.
In Game 2, Jared Kreiner netted five three-pointers, including a 56-foot hook shot at the halftime buzzer, to lead St. Ignatius to victory.
Kevin Metke had eight points for the Muskies while Joey Angus added six.
