The Emo Speedway has postponed its season opener by a week due to recent poor weather conditions that have prevented track preparations in time for this weekend.

The season opener, which was initially planned for May 9, has been moved to May 15, with gates open at 6 p.m.

According to Tammy Strachan, the speedway’s board president, the recent cold and rain have interfered with making the grounds suitable for racing. “With the coldness this week, they can’t track prep in this weather,” Strachan said.

The open practice originally scheduled for the evening of May 8 has also been postponed to May 10, the following Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.

Although the date for the opener has changed, the day is still set to see races from each WISSOTA class, including Street Stock, Midwest Mods and Modifieds. The new Junior Slingshot class, aimed at kids aged eight to 14, is also set to host youth racers competing in the Central Canada Slingshot Series.

The Emo Speedway, a 3/8‑mile high‑banked clay oval in Emo, Ontario, has been a staple of Borderland motorsports for decades. Operated by the Borderland Racing Association, the track draws drivers and fans from across Northwestern Ontario and northern Minnesota for fast, close‑quarters Saturday‑night racing. The facility includes covered bleachers, accessible seating, canteens and free parking.

The speedway regularly hosts WISSOTA Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, and Modifieds, along with the Junior Slingshots and visiting series throughout the season.

Special events such as Spring MAYhem and the Emo Fair weekend highlight the schedule each year, making the track a key summer gathering spot for the region’s racing community.
