It was hard to keep the Emo Penguins from taking flight during the Atom girls’ hockey tournament held there Dec. 10-12.
The first game saw the Penguins battle the Fort Frances Rolling Lake Lightning to a 3-3 draw, with Sydney Beck earning game MVP honours.
Avery Cates scored twice for the Penguins, with Katie Hay notching the other goal.
In their second game, the Penguins were blanked 3-0 by the Lake of the Woods Flyers (Kenora).
Pasquel Shortreed was named game MVP in that one.
The Penguins then faced off with International Falls, winning 1-0 on Cates’ lone goal (she also was named game MVP).
Emo wrapped up round-robin play against Kaemingh Esso (Fort Frances), needing a win to advance to the tournament final against the Flyers.
Game MVP Taylor Croswell had a solid performance, scoring all four Emo goals to secure a spot in the final.
The Penguins met the Flyers in the gold-medal match. This time, Emo played as a team to blank the Flyers 2-0 to win the tourney title.
Beck earned another shut out while Sarah Calder scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Croswell.
Cates also tallied to put the Penguins ahead going into the third period.
The whole arena watched as the clock ran down in the third period, where no goals were made.
The Emo Penguins won gold at home!
Beck had a strong appearance in net, registering three shutouts over the weekend.
There also was a very strong performance from the two Fort Frances squads, which ended up claiming the top two spots on the ‘B’ side.
Meanwhile, the Emo girls’ PeeWee team, the Predators, finished the round-robin portion of the tournament in fifth place.
As well, the Emo girls’ novice team, the Rockets, hosted two exhibition games against the Fort Frances Timbits.
