The Emo Leafs were among the 22 teams that participated in the third-annual GM Dryden Atom ‘A’ hockey tournament this past weekend.
Other squads there included the MEC Bulldogs (Fort Frances), as well as ones from Atikokan, Ignace, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, Kenora, Keewatin, and host Dryden.
The Leafs reached the ‘D’ final but fell 2-1 to the Red Lake Rockets in a shootout in overtime. Jake Esselink scored Emo’s lone goal.
Emo opened action Friday with a 4-1 loss to Dryden Esso. Trevor Wolframe, assisted by Ryan York, got the lone Leaf goal.
Emo then faced the Atikokan Penguins and ended up on the losing end of a 4-3 barnburner. Tyler Kinnear and Nathan DeBungee (unassisted) scored for the Leafs.
But then up against the Brown Kanucks (Kenora), Craig McTavish scored all three goals as Emo earned a 3-0 shutout.
Meanwhile, the MEC Bulldogs edged Dryden Esso 1-0 for the ‘B’ crown and it was the Atikokan Penguins sidelining Dryden Safeway 4-1 in the ‘C’ final.
Atikokan Gillons’ met Bar-B-Q Bob’s (Kenora) in the ‘A’ final Sunday at 5 p.m. but the winner of that game is not known.
