Early runs silence Sight and Sound

It only took three pitches for the Pinewood Bears to grab a one-run lead on Sight and Sound.
And it was a lead they never surrendered en route to a 6-0 win in Rainy River District Fastball League action last Thursday night at VanJura Stadium here.
The loss dropped Sight and Sound to a 1-5 record (as of Monday) to sit at the bottom of the eight-team standings. Pinewood is at the middle of the pack at 3-3.
Pinewood second basemen Justin Wagner belted a lead-off home run against pitcher Donnie Larson to open the scoring. Later, pitcher John Desaulnier singled to send Kyle Langlais home to give Pinewood a 2-0 lead.
They added a run in the third inning when left fielder Bill Olson laid down a sharp sacrifice bunt to bring home Shane Aikenhead, who had led off the inning with a double.
Third basemen Rick Tymkin then scored from first base in the sixth inning to make it 4-0.
Sight and Sound threatened in the second and sixth innings with runners in scoring position but couldn’t put any runs on the board.
“We had some hits but stranded too many guys on the bases,” noted third basemen Derek McKinnon “We just couldn’t bring them in.”
Desaulnier added more insurance runs after hitting a two-run homer in the seventh. He delivered on offence and defence, going 2-4 at the plate while shutting out Sight and Sound for this third win of the season.
Wagner also had a strong night at the plate for Pinewood, going was 3-5, He missed hitting for the cycle by a double.
“We got the key hits when we needed them and our defence made the plays when they threatened,” said Desaulnier, who also pitches for a team in Fargo, N.D. that won its pool at the Division II World Series last summer.
And while he was unhappy with some of his and the team’s errors in the game, it didn’t cost them in the end. “I think the key thing was we didn’t make errors when they had runners on base,” he noted.
Meanwhile, McKinnon said Sight and Sound still is trying to get used to playing with one another.
“The last couple of weeks we’ve starting to get our regular guys out,” he remarked. “We’re just starting to get our players out and together.”
He added besides this game, they’ve stayed close with the league’s other teams. They lost a close 4-3 contest to Zig’s Place in extra innings last Tuesday.
Their next home game is tomorrow against Barwick at 8 p.m.
