Eagles settle for silver in Dryden

The local Lakewood Tire Eagles allowed only two goals en route to the gold-medal game of the Kathy Sanders Memorial Tournament in Dryden.
Unfortunately, they gave up three in the final as they were edged 3-2 by the Kenora Red Inferno Flames.
Meanwhile, Fort Frances Super 8 advanced to the bronze-medal game but they also wewre unsuccessful, falling 3-1 to Dryden Petro Canada.
The Eagles began their championship challenge with a 3-0 blanking of the Dryden PT Cruisers on Friday morning.
Amy Penner opened the scoring at 8:58 of the first while Madison Weir put one away at 3:22 of the second.
Penner tallied once again at 10:35 of the third to finish the offensive charge.
Then on Friday night, the Eagles siphoned Dryden Petro Canada 4-1.
Weir opened the scoring at 7:36 of the first before Penner netted the eventual game-winner at 10:51.
Penner added another at 9:17 of the third and defender Sydney Johnson rounded out the Eagles’ scoring.
Rachel Getson notched Dryden’s lone goal.
The Eagles then advanced to the gold-medal game by clipping the Red Lake Hawks 5-1.
Rachel Jean offered some quick offence off the top, bulging the twine twice within 1:18 to stake her teams to a 2-0 lead after one.
Weir put the Eagles up 3-0 midway through the second while Penner kept up her two-goals-a-game pace, scoring late in both the second and third periods.
Sarah Dodic replied for Red Lake early in the third.
The magic ran out in the final, though, when the Eagles fell 3-2 to Kenora.
The Flames surged ahead early when Eve Charlebois scored just under two minutes in. Kenora then went up 3-0 early in the second as Spencer Alcock and Kylie Fisher lit the lamp 2:20 apart.
The Eagles stormed back shortly afterwards, though, as Penner scored less than two minutes after Fisher to bring the Eagles to within 3-1.
Carly Taggart helped the Eagles claw closer, netting her first of the tournament 26 seconds after Penner.
But the Eagles were unable to net the equalizer and were forced to settle for silver.
Super 8, meanwhile, kicked off the tournament with an 8-1 romp over the Red Lake Chiefs.
Myla Angus opened the scoring less than two minutes in, then Madisyn DeGagne and Cassandra Moffitt followed up with first-period goals to make it 3-0.
Haleigh Litwin got Red Lake on the board midway through the second, but Claire Tibbs responded for Super 8.
In the third, Sara Angus put Super 8 up 5-1 before Myla Angus completed her hat trick with a pair late in the frame.
Abbi Perreault rounded out the scoring with a tally with just over two minutes to go.
Angus’ performance snagged her player of the game honours.
Friday evening brought an even match with the Thunder Bay Sharks as the teams fought to a 4-4 tie.
Kayla Etreni opened the scoring for Thunder Bay at 7:27 but Moffitt replied 3:15 later.
DeGagne then put Fort Frances ahead with two minutes left in the first.
Thunder Bay scored twice within 2:12 to wrestle away the lead, but Super 8 replied with a quick strike of their own in the third.
Amber Jourdain netted a pair in a 56-second span to put Super 8 ahead 4-3, but the Sharks responded 40 seconds after Jourdain’s second to cement the 4-4 draw.
Shanleigh Fryer’s work in the net to maintain the tie helped her lock up the player of the game.
Super 8 maintained their undefeated record through three games by edging the Dryden PT Cruisers 1-0.
Moffitt tallied the lone goal with just 7.4 seconds left in the first to help Super 8 into the bronze-medal game against Dryden Petro Canada.
Abbi Perreault was awarded player of the game.
After a scoreless first period of the bronze medal game, Dryden struck early in the second as Anicka Tardiff put one away.
Tariff added another in the third while Getson scored 1:55 afterwards.
DeGagne put Super 8 on the board with 2:10 left in the third but they couldn’t sneak closer en route to a fourth-place finish.
