DYS wins track meets

Donald Young School racked up 174 points to top the recent elementary track and field meet in Rainy River.
Riverview placed second with 169 points, followed by Sturgeon Creek (123), Nestor Falls (39), McCrosson-Tovell (36), Big Island (22), and Big Grassy (14).
In the intermediate division, DYS once again was tops with 188 points, followed by Sturgeon Creek (155), Riverview (120), Big Island (52), Nestor Falls (48), McCrosson-Tovell (34), and Big Grassy (eight).
Stephanie Marcowich paced DYS by finishing first in both the 100m and 400m races while Thomas Edwards was first in the 400m and 1,500m ones.
Brett Meyers captured top honours in the 100m and was second in the long jump, Jacob Esselink was first in the ball throw, and Matt Redford placed second in the high jump.
In girls’ high jump, Danielle O’Sullivan and Riley Ogden came first and second respectively. In the relay, DYS took top spot.
Mark Heyens and Doug Hudson came in first and second for DYS in the high jump for the grade six boys while Alana Wieringa and Amber Daw placed second in long jump and high jump respectively among the grade six girls.
Chelsey Ogden and Sara Edwards finished one-two in the 400m race, and then reversed positions in the 1500m. Edwards tied with a Riverview student for the individual medal winner with 13 points each.
In the relay, DYS placed third behind Sturgeon Creek and Riverview.
Among grade seven boys, Daniel Hettinga never looked back in capturing first in the 100m, 400m, and 1500m races while Jordan Wilson won both the 200m and 800m events.
Eric Mosbeck took first in the long jump, and placed second in the high jump and triple jump.
Hettinga was the individual medal winner with 17 points.
In the relay, DYS came second behind Nestor Falls.
