At this rate, the tournament soon will have to be named after them.
The Thunder Bay duo of Glenn Leroux and Trevor Zimak successfully defended their title from last year in claiming the annual Atikokan Bass Classic held Friday and Saturday.
It was the fifth such title for Leroux and Zimak, who topped the 110-team field with a two-day total of 42.71 pounds to take home the $7,000 winner’s cheque.
That total was their best-ever–surpassing the 42.1 pounds they landed in winning their first crown back in 2009.
Leroux and Zimak led wire-to-wire, reeling in 22.17 pounds on Day 1 before following that up with another 20.54 on the final day.
The top of the leaderboard looked very similar to last year’s, with six of the 2017 top 10 doing so again.
Mike Wilson of International Falls and Zack McBride of Fort Frances repeated as runners-up with a 41.23-pound total, settling for $5,000.
They also had the biggest fish on Saturday–a 5.65-pound lunker that netted them another $400 courtesy of Investors dealer Mike Puderbach.
Rene and Debora Cadene of Atikokan, who finished fifth last year, moved up to third this time around with 41.08 pounds.
After finishing 16th last year, Ben and Eli Anderson of Atikokan nabbed fourth place (39.59) while Jeff and Tina Sampson of Bloomer rounded out the top five (38.92).
Travis Schallock and Dany Michel of Nanika placed sixth (38.51), followed by Jody Loew of Sapawe and Shaina Loew of Atikokan in seventh (38.19).
Matt Goldamer of Fort Frances and Bill Godin of Devlin were eighth (36.39) while Todd and Steven Bryk of Atikokan slipped a spot to ninth place this year (36.18).
Jeff Veenbaas and Jim Ferguson of Atikokan, who were fourth last year, rounded out the top 10 (35.79).
Kevin Rissanen of Atikokan and Cory Nephin of Geraldton landed the big fish on Day 1, tipping the scales with a 6.16-pounder.
