Dryden duo sweep bowling tourney

Darryl Rollins and Kyle Botos felt right at home—even if their real home was two hours away.
The Dryden pair took care of the competition at the annual Fort Frances Invitational bowling tournament at Plaza Lanes last weekend, with Rollins winning the scratch championship while Botos earned the pins over average crown.
The victories netted each one a cool $500 as they proved to be the ultimate survivors of the two-day, 10-game marathon that featured 56 participants from across Northwestern Ontario.
Rollins had a high single of 328 en route to a 258 average over the 10 games. Runner-up Kevin Blake from Kenora was 63 pins behind to pocket $250.
Dan Bone was the top local bowler with a total pinfall of 2,505, including a high single of 291, to take home $125.
Terry Wood of Fort Frances won $75 for being fourth with a total of 2,286 while Jim Cook of Dryden was fifth with 2,252 to earn $50.
Botos was sixth in the scratch division with a 2,231 total to garner $20, but his +541 in the pins over average category netted him a much larger windfall.
He entered the tournament with a 169 average, but beat that score in all 10 of his games—and delivered the tournament’s best single (347) as a bonus.
Botos easily out-distanced fellow Dryden bowler Terri Cook, who finished second at +343 to win $250.
Blake was third at +314 to earn $125, while Fort Frances’ Roy Belluz was the best of the local entrants with a fourth-place finish at +255 to take home $75.
Wood took fifth with a +236 to garner $50, while sixth through 11th place went to Kenora’s Joy Ashton (+225), Kenora’s Dave Dennis (+224), Dryden’s Stephen Kressall (+209), Bone (+205), Carey Basaraba of Fort Frances (+179), and his Plaza Lanes colleague Robert Bombay (+174).
All six grabbed $20 for their efforts.
Sitting in seventh through 10th place in the scratch category, respectively, were Dryden’s Maureen Desserre (2,223), Dennis (2,214), Rollie Mousseau (2,182), and Roger Peterson (2,169), with all winning $20.
This weekend, six local pairs head up to Dryden for the adult Hi-Lo doubles tournament.
