District students race in Lakehead

Local runners cracked the top 10 at the 39th-annual Mid-Canada Elementary School Run in Thunder Bay on Saturday.
Leading the charge in the roughly three-km run was Jennifer Hammond of Sturgeon Creek, who finished fourth in the girls’ division with a time of 12:34.90.
Hammond beat last year’s seventh-place finish, when she ran the race in 13:08.90.
On the boys’ side, Maxwell Williams of Donald Young School in Emo had a time of 11:23.40 to finish in sixth place.
Melissa Hammond and Hunter Neilson, both of Sturgeon Creek, also beat last year’s times.
Hammond shaved more than a minute from her time while Neilson bested his previous time by more than 90 seconds.
