District figure skaters strong at competition

Just over 30 skaters from the Border and Emo figure skating clubs attended the 28th-annual Sunset Country Interclub Competition in Ignace on the last weekend in January.
There were 218 skaters registered for the event from clubs from across Northwestern Ontario, including Atikokan, Dryden, Eagle Lake, Ear Falls, Ignace, Keewatin, Kenora, Sioux Lookout, and Vermilion Bay.
The results for the members of the Border Figure Skating Club are as follows:
•Sara McComb–1st junior silver compulsory, 1st all-Ontario junior silver ladies freeskate, and 2nd open ladies freeskate;
•Lindsay Hallikas–4th junior bronze spins (group 2), 2nd pre-bronze artistic, and 6th junior bronze ladies freeskate;
•Paige Chambers–8th pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “D”, 1st pre-preliminary ladies spins (group 1), and 3rd pre-preliminary ladies freeskate “B” (group 3);
•Molly Tharlson–3rd pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “B”, 7th pre-preliminary ladies spins (group 2), and 4th pre-preliminary ladies freeskate “A” (group four);
•Samantha Loveday–6th pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “C” and 7th pre-preliminary ladies freeskate “B” (group 4);
•Lindsay Huerd–1st preliminary spins (group 1), 3rd senior interpretive, and 4th preliminary ladies “B” (group 2);
•Kendra Krause–1st Canskate “B” (group 1);
•Melanie Herr–2nd preliminary ladies compulsory (group 2) and 3rd preliminary ladies freeskate “B” (group 1);
•Jenna-Rae Cousineau–5th junior bronze ladies compulsory (group 2), 3rd pre-bronze artistic, and 2nd preliminary ladies freeskate “B” (group 1);
•Kate Basaraba–5th junior bronze ladies compulsory (group 2), 2nd senior interpretive, and 3rd junior bronze ladies freeskate;
•Katie Bondett–4th intermediate interpretive, 2nd preliminary ladies freeskate “B” (group 1), and 10th all-Ontario preliminary ladies freeskate;
•Tracey DeAmicis–1st junior bronze ladies compulsory (group 1), 4th all-Ontario junior bronze ladies freeskate, and 2nd junior bronze ladies freeskate;
•Tara Tovey–6th pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “D”, 3rd pre-preliminary ladies spins, and 4th pre-preliminary ladies freeskate “B” (group 1);
•Athena Pirkl–1st preliminary ladies compulsory (group 2), 7th preliminary spins (group 2), and 1st preliminary ladies freeskate “B” (group 1);
•Kalene Krause–2nd pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “B” and 2nd pre-preliminary ladies freeskate “A” (group 2);
•Faith Kakeeway–6th pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “B” and 8th pre-preliminary ladies freeskate “B” (group 2);
•Riley Blaskey–8th preliminary ladies compulsory (group 1) and 1st preliminary ladies freeskate “B” (group 2);
•Holly McRae–2nd intermediate interpretive and 2nd senior bronze ladies freeskate;
•Monique Bekesi–1st pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “D” and 1st pre-preliminary ladies freeskate “B” (group 4); and
•Shane Katona–2nd junior silver compulsory and 1st junior silver mens freeskate.
Meanwhile, the Emo Figure Skating Club sent 16 skaters to the competition and their results were as follows:
•Lindsey Richardson–5th pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “A”;
•Kayla Benjamin–1st pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “A”;
•Nicki Mosbeck–1st pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “A”;
•Taylor Latimer–1st pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “B” and 1st pre-preliminary ladies free style;
•Dana Drennan–3rd pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “B” and 5th pre-preliminary ladies free style;
•Brittany Jackson–2nd pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “B” and 1st pre-preliminary ladies free style;
•Ashlee Nordstrom–1st pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “B” and 1st pre-preliminary ladies free style;
•Kaylene Krause–2nd pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “B” and 2nd pre-preliminary ladies free style;
•J.J Hunsperger–2nd pre-preliminary ladies compulsory and 1st pre-preliminary ladies free style (she also was awarded the “Holly Toderian-Pitura Memorial Trophy”);
•Nadine Mutz–1st pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “C” and 5th pre-preliminary ladies free style;
•Diana Redford–1st pre-preliminary ladies compulsory “C” and 5th pre-preliminary ladies free style;
•Brandy Hyatt–2nd senior bronze spins,1st all-Ontario senior bronze ladies, and 1st senior bronze ladies free style (she also was awarded the “Senior Bronze Ladies Trophy).
•Noreen Hartlin–first junior silver spins, fourth all-Ontario senior bronze ladies, third senior bronze ladies free style.
In the Canskate division, Kendra Krause, Paige Vien, and Madison Boisvert all finished first, Paige McNally was third, and Kennedy Latimer fourth.
The Emo Figure Skating Club also won two trophies at the competition, including the one for team spirit. They also won the Ignace Trophy, which is given to the club with the highest percentage of medal winners based on the number of club entries.
The Emo Club also had a Test Day on Jan. 15 and here are the results for that:
