Defence, defence, defence

Playing a style that got him to the provincial playdowns earlier this year, Raymond Roy used his defensive strategy to perfection Sunday in beating Rob Sinclair Jr. 6-1 in the ‘A’-event final of the annual men’s bonspiel here.
Roy never trailed in the game, opening up with a deuce in the first end.
After Sinclair Jr. cut into that lead with one in the second, Roy scored a single in the third, then stole one in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
The teams shook hands after six ends.
“Yeah, we curled very well,” said Roy, whose rink included third Dave Broman, second Greg Tighe, and lead Rob Gushulak. “We scored first in every single game and grabbed the lead.”
Jumping out to an early lead is the key to Roy’s game. Once he gets ahead, he becomes very tough to beat. And he beat a very solid rink in Sinclair Jr., who along with teammate Dale Wiersema, competed at the Brier in Winnipeg in 1998 as part of Bruce Melville’s rink.
They were joined by local curlers Rob Sinclair Sr. and Ron Martinuk for the men’s bonspiel.
“We had a bad first end and they stole two,” said Martinuk. “[Roy] doesn’t miss any shots. It doesn’t matter what kind of strategy you use.”
True. But surrendering just 11 points in six games helps, too.
“We don’t want to give up points,” said Roy. “We held the lead and controlled every single game.”
In other action Sunday, Clare Brunetta’s rink of John McTaggart, Daryl Brain, and Mike Gerstner beat Everett Jackson’s foursome 7-5 to win the ‘B’ crown.
Jackson’s team included Andy Jackson, Tyler Bell, and Tom Campbell.
In the ‘C’ event final, Don DeBenedet’s rink of Clark Johnson, Rob Badiuk, and Dave Bondett dumped Craig Armstrong’s crew of Keith Jolicouer, Laurie Armstrong, and Bruce Nielson 7-3.
And Tim Nordin and his rink of Dale Morrison, Clifton Chojko-Bolec, and Roger Nielson downed Dan Macsemchuk’s foursome of Rob Mattas, Chewy Leiterman, and Raddy Johnson 5-2 to win the ‘D’ event.
