Not many people profess to enjoying Mondays but Lucas DeBenedet and the Fort Frances Lakers weren’t complaining yesterday.
DeBenedet was chosen as the Amyotte’s Awards & Promotions Corp. player-of-the-week after recording six points in two Laker victories last week.
The 19-year-old from International Falls has at least one point in each of his last eight games, which coincides with the team’s current eight-game winning streak.
DeBenedet has 16 points in all over that span.
The SIJHL’s reigning scoring champ now has 11 goals and 16 assists in 17 games since rejoining the Lakers back on Nov. 1.
The squad’s recent success also boosted the Lakers (25-7-0-1) up three spots to No. 12 in the latest CJHL top 20 rankings.
The MJHL’s Portage Terriers, this year’s host of the RBC Cup national Junior ‘A’ championship, remain in the top position with a phenomenal 41-2-2 record.
The Spruce Grove Saints (AJHL) jumped five spots to sit at No. 2 while the Penticton Vees (BCHL) held steady at No. 3.
The Lakers, meanwhile, will try to make it nine-straight wins when they host the English River Miners (6-26-3) tonight at 7:30 at the Ice For Kids Arena.
The Miners may have trouble finding the net after dealing top scorer Eric Champagne (30 points) and third-leading scorer Jake Staples (25) before Saturday’s trade deadline.
That leaves Dominic Blouin (27) as the only player with 20 or more points this season, compared to nine for the Lakers.
