DeBenedet beats Jackson twice to win zone bonspiel

After losing their round-robin game to Derek Jackson at the Zone 7 bonspiel here last weekend, Don DeBenedet’s rink had the unenviable task of having to beat him twice in the final to advance to the “Northwesterns.”
But DeBenedet’s crew did just that Sunday afternoon, stunning Jackson 7-6 and then 6-4 to earn one of three berths at the “Northwesterns” in Thunder Bay next month.
The other two berths will be filled next month after bonspiels in Stratton and Dryden.
After the first two ends were blanked to start the second game, DeBenedet stole a pair in the third to grab a 2-0 lead. The rinks then traded singles in the fourth and fifth ends before Jackson picked up a deuce in the sixth to knot the score at 3-3.
The teams blanked the seventh, then DeBenedet scored a pair in the eighth to take a 5-3 lead. Jackson pulled to within one with a single in the ninth before DeBendet sealed the win–and the berth–with one in the 10th.
DeBenedet’s rink, which included Clark Johnson (third), Greg Plumridge (second), and Don Robertson (lead), finished the round-robin with a 4-1 record. Jackson topped the six-team field with a 5-0 mark.
Rounding out the pack were Bryan Bonot, Tim Nordin, Curtis Sheloff, and Ken Wilson.
In other curling news, the Kathie Jackson rink of Fort Frances advanced to the ladies’ “Northwestern” playdowns next month in Dryden after no one challenged them at the zone level.
Her rink includes Kim Beaudry, Kelly Tolen, and Stacy Beacham.
